Various odors are common with death, regardless of the circumstances.  These odors may be caused by fecal matter, urine, blood and other bodily fluids associated with the process of decomposition.  Odor removal can be a daunting task for even the most experienced in the field. 

Other common odors may result from dead rodents, animal urine or fecal matter, smoke, mildew and many other sources.  These odors are equally troublesome and linger in the same fashion as odor from a human body.

Although odors may seem airborne, they actually permeate nearly every item and furnishing in the house.  These same odors become trapped under flooring, within walls and attics.  Without proper training and equipment, complete odor removal cannot be achieved.

What is an odor?

(1) The real odor, which is the pure sensation of smell and,

(2) Psychological odors or heightened awareness odors that people think they smell based on previous experience, suggestions and past impressions.

 

Odors are transmitted by:

  • Humidity

  • Temperature

  • Evaporation

  • Penetration of odors into surfaces and fabrics

The processes of odor control are:

  • Masking, which is disguising an odor with a more pleasant odor
  • Pairing, using a chemical which transforms the odor's chemistry into a new non-odorous compound
  • Modifications, which is when a chemical is used to change the structure of an odor to eliminate its ability to produce the odor
  • Ozone, which is an electrically powered device utilized to produce an oxidizing odor control gas on location

Basic principals of odor control are:

  • Eliminate the source
  • Clean the contaminated area
  • Use fog or gas
  • It may be necessary to seal the source that was exposed to the contamination"
